Activity: Book & Leprechaun Traps

Today we listened to Pete The Cat & the Great Leprechaun Chase on YouTube. (Wonderful resource when libraries are closed due to the Corona Virus).

Activity: Alphabet Hunt

Today when I needed to fold laundry I gave S an Alphabet Treasure Hunt.

I took our storage bin*, put alphabet letters in it, and half marbles. And then gave him a treasure map with the uppercase letters on it. He had to dig through the bin to find the letters in that to them up on the treasure map.

Activity: Chalk

We love being outside and having unstructured playtime. But we also like to try & get in some structured learning sometimes. These last few days we did this with sidewalk chalk.

We are working with A to practice her reading. And we notice that if there is a break between days she is fairly resistant to it right now. So, to offer her opportunities for success I am trying to make some short interactive options. Keep reading to see some of the ways we have incorporated chalk.

Activity: Sponge Water “Balloons”

It is summer & it is hot & humid, so we need ways to stay cool. Today we headed to a BBQ & thought it would be a great time to try this activity. Sponge Water “Balloons” 🎈

Activity: Sit Spot

Bonus: no prep or materials needed!

Today we did a Sit Spot at home. This is where you have each kid pick one spot to regularly sit and look, listen, smell, & feel the surroundings. This is a great way to connect with your surroundings.

Activity: Hole Punch

Today we did this simple yet complex activity. We took a piece of paper, drew a line, then asked S to punch holes on it. It took a lot of hand strength to punch the holes and then a lot of concentration to punch the holes along the line.

Modifications: This is an easy activity to change how easy or hard it is. Simplest: punch random holes in paper. Harder: create a picture & punch holes to follow the picture. Numbers: ask them to punch certain number of holes. Use punches to work with adding or subtracting. Shapes: ask them to punch out a shapes. (Either draw a shapes & ask them to follow it or ask them to punch it out on their own).

This is an easy activity I’m sure we will do again!

Activity: Roll A Monster

A really likes most aspects of art, so today we played Roll A Monster. (From Twin Dragonfly Design). But instead of using Felt, we drew our monsters.

Activity: Lego Dice Game

Thanks to The Dad Lab we tried this Lego Dice Game. We have played it several times lately and the kids are enjoying this. We each picked a Lego person, and then rolled the dice. Whatever number came up we stacked that number of legos on top of each other. We took turns rolling & stacking. We kept going & saw who had the highest tower. (Only stopping when either: the tower fell, it was time to go, or we ran out of single Duplo blocks.)

Activity: The Rainbow Explosion

You’ve got to try this! All you need is: milk, food coloring, cotton swab, & rubbing alcohol!

We got the book Exploring Kitchen Science for Christmas. Last week I pulled it out & let A look through it & pick out some she would like to try.

Today we tried the Rainbow Explosion. This was a great experiment because: we had all of the ingredients at home, prep was little, & results were immediate. Before we started we made predictions about what would happen.
