Kiwi Crate: Arcade Claw

We enjoyed another one of our Kiwi Crates today. This one was about arcade games. A was so excited about this she started it first thing in the morning in her PJ’s. 🙂 The first step she started was creating a pom pom guy.

Kiwi Crate: Music (& feelings)

Today we have been focusing on Feelings. (Happy, silly, scared, worried, strong, ect.) So the Kiwi Crate box fit right in today with Music.

We started by talking about what are ways that you can show emotion. They came up with things like: drawing, words, face (smile, frown), dancing. Then dancing lead us to talk about what you hear when you dance sometimes…music!

So we read the story & had great discussions about many aspects of music, instruments, & feelings.

Space Exploration: Part 2

Our space exploration continues. Today we finally had some time to break out our paint. With our Kiwi Crate there were watercolor stickers of each of the planets. After reading the story that came with the kit, we talked about what each of the planets looked like (& had pictures for reference). Then A proceeded to paint the planets. S also painted some pictures.

Space Exploration: Part 1

We got a new Kiwi Crate the other day. This time I decided to use it as part of a larger Project Based Learning unit. So we started off with sitting on the stairs & “seeing that our house has floated into space”. Then the (pretend) phone rang and it was mission control asking A & S for their help in building a rocket ship & exploring space. In addition to their rocket ship they also built their Control center.

It’s Pirate Week!

We are part of the Virtual Kids Book Club. Here they choose a theme with a related book, and then activities to go with it. The suggested activities are also divided into: sensory, alphabet, math, science, & imagination.

This week is Pirate week. We started it off with using one of our Kiwi Crates: Secret Agents. From this box we used the secret message pens. A & S had to decode the message.

From there they went to build their pirate boats. They spent a lot of time decorating their boats. Here we also used our secret message pens that show up under blacklight.

Kiwi Co Crate: Stethoscope

Today we did one of the activities from A’s kiwi co box. Her theme this month is about Bodies. We started off with the story & then let her choose which of the 3 projects she wanted to make today. She choose the stethoscope.

It was fun watching her figure out what parts went where & then continue to try on the difficult parts for assembly.

As soon as they finished making it they got right to trying it out.

Which of course lead to them playing Dr. 🙂

Kiwi Co Crate: Rainbow Pillow

The kids were given a subscription to Kiwi Co crates as birthday gifts. One is set for S’ s age, & one for A’ s age. My favorite thing so far is watching them work together on the projects.

The first one we did was all about rainbows. This was fitting as we just saw a big double rainbow the day before. The crate starts off with a short story about the topic. Then it explains fun ways to create your own rainbows.

Next we started with our first project. (There are 3 main projects in each box.) Today this was creating a cloud/rainbow pillow. They provided a soft white cloud with a small opening on the bottom. Next they provided half circles of felt of decreasing size of all the colors in the rainbow. The felt had strong sticker adhesive on the back. A & S did a great job of taking turns when putting the colors on. Then it was time to stuff the pillow through the small opening. And to close it up there was strong Velcro. (I will go back later & sew it closed.)

S was so excited about this pillow he carried out around & slept with it for several days straight! We are excited to try the other projects!

Note: the only thing I would change is instead of Velcro close it the way Build A Bear sews theirs up.
